PREPARING FOR THE FLOOD

We can often witness every year about the floods that hit our country, Malaysia. But have we ever known the cause of this flood?

One fact to note is that Malaysia has a unique weather phenomenon. As a result, Malaysia has two Monsun. 

The first one is Monsun Barat Daya that runs from late May until September. The second one is Monsun Timur Laut that runs from November until March. 

Monsun Timur Laut brings heavy rain. It can contribute to a minimum monthly rainfall of 100-150mm. This phenomenon answered to the question of a major flood that occurred in Malaysia. 

The flood is an issue that should not be overlooked by the people as it can be life-threatening. Therefore, Malaysians should be prepared to deal with floods.

For the first preparations, be sure to have a flood warning system as well as hear more about flood announcements that happen in our area. 

This is important to know about flood events. Once they are aware of the incident, the people can be prepared in advance of the flood. 

Some of the mediums available for use are radio, television, flood-affected government agencies and the State or District Flood Operations Room.

Next, the second preparations is to close the power switch, the main water and gas leakage valve inside the home. This step should be emphasized to ensure the safety of family members regardless of child or adult. 

Electric switches are very dangerous even more when floods occur. It can cause electrical shock and next can also cause death.

In addition, the shutdown of the power switch, the main supply of water and gas can prevent wastage in the event of an emergency that cause the family members to move from the house and not being able to do anything beforehand.

In addition, the preparation is to place important documents in a safe place and carry them along in a waterproof container when moving. 

This is particularly important because the document should be used as a reference of citizenship. 

Documents that should be brought are personal identification cards, birth certificates, health records and other important documents.

We should not be too busy thinking about the possessions in the house that will be ruined  due to the flood because the lives of our families and ourselves are more important.

In conclusion, everyone should be aware of the dangers of this flood. This is because floods not only lead to infrastructure damage, but also to disease and death.

Parents should teach their children the steps to deal with the flood so that they can handle the incident more wisely. The government should work hard to provide temporary shelter, food and other necessities for flood victims.
